One of the most important things that you can do as a parent when your child starts school is to stay connected with your child’s teachers. This is easy to do and there is no excuse why a parent should not stay informed as to what their child is doing. When the time comes for school to start, you want to go with your child to open house. This is the first step in getting to know who your child’s teacher is and what they expect out of your child. You will receive paperwork to complete and a list of the important supplies that your child will need. There will be volunteer forms to fill out, and this is also another great way to be more involved. If you have free time, then by all means volunteer to help in the classroom. The more you are in the classroom and are talking to the teacher, the more you can help your child succeed in school.
Through the year, you will receive report cards and progress reports. Some teachers have daily communication systems where they send home notes letting parents know how their child has behaved during the day. If you have any questions about how your child is doing in class, send a note in with your child or call the school and ask to talk to their teacher. In today’s world of social media, send them a message on Facebook or another social outlet. Talk to the teacher in whichever way you can. Set up a conference if you have any concerns so that they can be addressed. You also need to talk to your child to find out what they think about their teacher and their class. If they do not like something that is going on, you need to handle it before it becomes too much of an issue.
